Getting Started in Youth Hockey
Franklin Youth Hockey's Learn to Play Hockey program is often imitated but there is no substitute for the best!
Our Skating School Program for Hockey Players begins with
Learn To Skate program taught at the Beginner level. The rink will be divided into three groups: a beginner group, an intermediate group, and an advanced group. Each child will be advanced to the next group by on-ice instructors (with parental concurrence) as their skating skills improve.
- Beginners - This group is intended for early skating development. Basic skills will be taught, including: balance, walking, striding, glide turns, and stopping. Backward skating and crossovers will be introduced.
- Intermediate - Skating skills will be taught, such as glide turns, intro to crossovers, several stopping methods, backward skating, edge control, and transitions.
- Advanced - Skating skills will be reinforced and basic hockey skating skills will be introduced. Skaters will master, glide turns, crossovers, several stopping methods, backward skating, edge control, and transitions.
The next step is
Learn To Play Hockey where players will start on a year long program that will teach them the skills of skating, stick-handling and the basic rules of hockey. A strong emphasis is placed upon skating and enjoyment of the game.
This program is an excellent complement to FYHA's popular Learn to Skate Program, which has been recognized by Mass Hockey as the model for which all hockey organizations should base their Learn to Skate programs.
All players will benefit from hands on instruction and constant encouragement. In addition, all players receive a Franklin Youth Hockey jersey. Players are required to wear full hockey gear.
All of our instructors are certified by USA Hockey, and follow FYHA's time-tested program that annually produces players that made us Massachusetts Hockey's "Program of the Year" in 1999, and perennially one of the strongest, most competitive programs in all of Massachusetts.
