2008-2009 FYHA Tuition
Dear Franklin Flyer Parents,
I know how hard it is to think about hockey this time of year; with baseball, softball, lacrosse and the kids being out of school. I hope you are all enjoying the better weather! As promised in my introductory letter, I am writing in the interest of open communication.
Our hockey program continues to be very competitive in terms of price. In fact, upon recent review Franklin has one of the least expensive hockey programs in the area and our goal is to maintain this low cost status. However, in reviewing our expenses for next year, we do need to increase the tuition for the 2008/2009 season. We strive to keep the cost for families at a minimum while still providing a valuable learning experience for the kids where they can develop as players and have fun.
The tuitions for next year are as follows:
Mite = $1000 Midget = $550
Squirt = $1000 Learn to Play Hockey = $550
Pee Wee = $1000
Bantam = $1000 Learn to Skate = $125
Goalies (Squirt through Midget) will receive a 50% credit towards their tuition.
(Added to the tuition will be a $50 per family fundraising fee)
In years past, FYHA has taken the steps to register each player with USA and MASS Hockey. Starting this season, we will require each family to register their skater or skaters with USA Hockey. The fee of $35 (for skaters 6 years old or older) can be paid by credit card directly and securely at the USA Hockey web site. Instructions on this will be e-mailed out shortly. This change has been requested of each program across the country by USA and MASS hockey.
The increases are due to the usual annual increases in ice costs and league fees, additional ice hours added to the schedule, and a slight drop in the overall players. There is a variance every year in the number of total players. A healthy strategy in combating this variance is to build the program from the grass roots and build the numbers in the Learn to Skate and Learn to Play Hockey levels. We are considering a number of different approaches to increasing the numbers of younger players who are just starting out.
We considered the increased expenses and the total number of players, and calculated the new total price in order to balance our budget.
I ask that all parents remember these key points:
1. Franklin Youth Hockey is a non-profit organization that is 100% run by volunteers.
2. The Board will always look for ways to keep the cost of our program low. We are considering creative ideas with regards to fundraising and sponsorships. This year, for example, we are introducing a Franklin Flyers Golf Tournament on September 16, 2008 at The Franklin Country Club. This event will be yet another way for us to raise money and keep the costs passed on to parents at a minimum. My hope is that this will become a successful annual event. Keep your eye out on the web site for upcoming details. I hope for a great turnout!
3. We want to ensure that all kids that want to play hockey are given the opportunity to play. With this in mind we provide the following options:
a. We have limited funds available through our Tuition Assistance Program.
b. We offer payment plans.
For details on these options please contact Dave Moses, Registrar (contact info on the website).
Parents who are interested in contributing to the Tuition Assistance Program can indicate their donation when paying their invoice. All contributions are greatly appreciated as again we want to do all that we can to ensure that all players have the opportunity to play.
I am very proud to be a part of a Youth Hockey organization that has so many dedicated and loyal families who contribute so much to the Flyers success. Whether through your time or your dollars, I appreciate all that you do as parents.
As always, feel free to reach out to me or any Board member anytime with any questions.
Have a great summer,
Mark

Message from the FYHA Head Coach
Below is a list of head coach selections for the 2008-2009 season and the ideal situation is to have 3 - 4 coaches in place for each team. At the youth level, I am a firm believer in getting as many people involved as possible.
Housekeeping notes:
In the next few days, I will be supplying each head coach with his team roster. Each coach will send out a “welcome email” (or by phone if preferred) introducing himself to the parents and players.
I will also provide each head coach with a list of interested assistant coaches for their respective team. The head coach, with my assistance, will also reach out to these individuals.
If anyone has any questions, please do not hesitate to send me an email - cdwyer@franklinflyers.com

Message From FYHA President
Dear Parents,
As the incoming President of the Franklin Youth Hockey Board, I wanted to take this opportunity to tell you all about my first impressions, my goals for the program, and my overall philosophy when it comes to youth hockey. Following the team placement announcements, I feel that it is important for you all to know more about the program processes, intentions, and about my position on our future.
I want to first thank all the previous board members for their time and efforts to make our program one of the top youth hockey organizations in the state. I will strive to continue their good work.
I am very excited about being in this position and am impressed with the tremendous talent that we have with the individuals on the current Board. I am confident that this group has competencies important to our success. Those competencies include knowledge of the game of hockey, caring about the players, and a desire to make Franklin the strongest program it can be.
In terms of first impressions, I have come to learn in the past several days that there is a lack of understanding as to how Franklin Youth Hockey policies and processes work. This is very evident when it comes to the tryout process, so let me start there.
Unlike many other programs our current tryout process is all about numbers. There is no subjective selection on the part of previous or current Board members, or coaches, on where players are placed. There is no flexibility and no opportunity for there to be favoritism. Each tryout session has evaluators assigned to the players. Each evaluator scores the players according to a number of criteria. They assign a number to each criterion and turn in their score sheets at the end of each session. Each player is reviewed by a number of different evaluators during each session. The evaluators are also rotated so that players are not subject to the same peoples’ judgment during each session.
The evaluation sheets are tallied by the evaluator at the end of each session. Those evaluation sheets are turned over to the Vice President of the Board. The Board then enters into several meetings where the scores are entered by us as a group.
These meetings also include:
1. A double and triple checking of the math on each sheet. These sheets are blind so that no player name is associated with the scores. The sheets are individually signed off on by two members of the Board.
2. The total scores are entered into a final spreadsheet that sorts by highest to lowest.
It is always a difficult position to be in when it comes to announcing the final outcome of where our players are going to be slotted for the upcoming season. I understand how much anxiety it can cause the kids and the families. This year we followed the traditional, by the numbers process that has been followed for years. However, we unfortunately had an unforeseen error. The error occurred in the Squirt division G-MI only. It also only affected the second scrimmage scores. I decided to share the error with all of you in the interest of integrity. What happened this year is the final spreadsheet had an incorrect formula that neglected to tally the second scrimmage scores. The formula just doubled the first scrimmage scores. The second scrimmage evaluator scores were correct and were entered correctly. The spreadsheet formula just neglected to incorporate those second scrimmage scores into the total and just added the first scrimmage scores twice.
I want to be clear that there was no confusion over player numbers, no player was given another players scores. Most Squirt G-MI players were just given his/her own evaluation numbers twice for scrimmage one, instead of adding scores from scrimmage two. This was a formula problem on the spreadsheet that thankfully was discovered in an audit process. Once the error was discovered we went back and checked all the other Mite, Squirt, Pee-Wee and Bantam formulas, and they were all correct. We also went back to last year’s spreadsheet and there were no errors in those formulas.
The results of this error had minimal impact on player placement. It didn’t change the fact that the numbers still dictated the player placement. The parents of the impacted players have been contacted. I appreciate all of your understanding with regards to the difficult try-out process and with this mistake that was caught and corrected. Any Squirt parent that would like to discuss the error should first contact Vice President, Chris Spillane. You can of course always also reach out to me. Please keep in mind that this error was only in some of the Squirt G-MI scrimmage two formulas.
There are lots of goals that I have set for the board for the upcoming season. We have every intention of researching other approaches to tryouts. We will research how other successful programs run their tryouts and get advice from seasoned hockey coaches and players that may have suggestions for how to make our process the best it can be. It will never be perfect, but we will always consider improvements. The Board is dedicated to ensuring that the tryout process created by the organization as a whole is as fair and consistent as possible.
It is also one of our goals to keep the entire membership informed and educated on our policies and processes. We will continue to work on communication with parents and players on the details of how the program is run. I ask parents to partner with coaches and Board members on issues and to trust that we all act in the best interest of the kids.
My philosophy on youth hockey is that it should be an opportunity for kids to have fun, improve as players, be good teammates, and meet lifelong friends. I look forward to getting to know all of you that I haven’t met and appreciate all the support that the parents have shown me and the Board since I have taken the position as President.
Sincerely,
Mark Allen
Team Placements
The Board of Directors would like to congratulate all the skaters on a job well done at try-outs.
Rosters are complete and team placements have been made.3
A few items of note:
Coaches have NOT been chosen at this point. Players are being notified electronically, and coaches will be selected in the next week or two in order to allow those who would like to coach the opportunity to toss their helmet in the ring.
Some families have signed up with multiple email addresses; this particular system only works with the primary email address. If your email address does not work, please follow the link on the bottom of the page for an alternative method. If you continue to have issues, please email a note to : cspillane@franklinflyers.com
If you have multiple players registered you will see all team placements provided they are registered with the same email address.
Player notification is a two step process and asks that you enter your email into a form and click submit. A unique web address will be emailed to you, which you can then click on to see team placement(s). Please be advised that while you should receive that email in short order, there are internet things out of our control that may delay its arrival.
Ok.. on with the show: http://www.franklinflyers.com/player_notify.asp

Team & Coach Placements
Team Placement Update – Chris Spillane, Vice President
The board of directors would like to commend all the boys and girls that completed tryouts for the Franklin Flyers this year. We would also like to thank outgoing Vice President, Chuck Bailey for coordinating the tryouts for hockey season 2008-2009. This year’s tryout process finished one week ago and took nearly six weeks from start to finish; we would like to thank each volunteer, parent and player for their attendance and patience.
Now that the tryout sessions are behind us, we are compiling scores in order to determine placement. Our goal is to finalize rosters within the next two weeks. We will be utilizing the same on-line notification system as last year. Each family will be e-mailed instructions when the rosters are available on-line. We understand that everyone is anxious to learn which team they are on and who their coach is; be assured we appreciate your patience and look forward to providing this information promptly. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me via e-mail, cspillane@franklinflyers.com.
Coach Selection Update – Chris Dwyer, Head Coach
Thank you to everyone for submitting their coaching applications in a timely manner. To date, we have received approximately 50 coaching applications for the 2008-2009 season. We are very pleased with the amount of folks that are eager to volunteer their time and assist in the development of our players. Ideally, we would like to have coach selections completed and communicated with the team notification; however, we also know it is extremely important to be sure that we have the most qualified people in place for all of our teams. With that being said, we will be doing a thorough review of all applications and we may find that we will need additional time and coaches may not yet be assigned when team placement is announced. We will keep everyone updated as we move forward with the coach selection process. Thank you and if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me via email. cdwyer@franklinflyers.com

Foxboro Supplemental Teams
For All Squirt and Peewee Players
As we have done over the past four years, based on enough interested skaters, we have entered a team into the NVL league, which plays their games on weekends at the Foxboro rink. This team is self funded by the families of the players. The cost will be in the $400 - $500 range and will include approximately 20 games plus playoff games, a team jersey, and a pair of socks. This team is strictly voluntary will eventually be limited to the first 16 skaters that pay.
At this time, I am not asking for a commitment, only an email back if you feel that you would be interested in skating on this team. If you could let me know by next weekend, May 12th, I would appreciate it.
Thank you,
Dave Moses

Congratulations to Squirt 3 State Champions!!!
The Squirt 3 team had quite a ride in these Playdowns to get the final result. In the end it was the “refuse to lose” attitude that they took to every game.Game 1 they handled Barnstable 10-1, game 2 had us up against Stoneham where we started off slow but finished strong in a 6-2 victory, game 3 we faced a very large Andover team that we out skated in the end with 4 third period goals. Now it is on to the Bracket Champions Wellesley team for game 4. Franklin went up 4 -0 and went on to win 9-1, Franklin’s back checking was too much for Wellesley to handle. The Finals had us up against another very large Tri City team after spotting them 2 goals in the first minute once again there back checking and continued balance attack took over en- route to 7 unanswered goals and the victory.Congratulations go out our goalie Peter A. who was tough all week end, on defense which I can’t say enough about is, Tyler O., Brendan M., Thomas S., Carolyn R., Kyle C. and Kyle C. The offence that put up a total of 37 goals and 28 assists was comprised of James A., Conner M. and Sean H., Chris B., Adam A. and Connor O., and last this line made up Kyle B., PJ M.and CJ B. were tremendous penalty killers and back checkers and also did there share of scoring.
Thank you to all the Parents and Fans that showed up. The team really appreciated the support.
The Coaches Dennis Hedvig, Rob Oakes and Jim McCaffrey are really proud of all of you as am I.
Thank you!!!

Youth Sports Festival
Massachusetts Hockey is proud to have teamed up with the New England Youth Sports Festival for the second year. The goal of the New England Youth Sports Festival is to introduce children and parents to a wide variety of sports by active participation, seminars for parents and coaches, and introductions to the people who run the major sports organizations. Massachusetts Hockey will put out an all-star effort to introduce boys and girls to the sport of ice hockey during the Festival weekend of February 22-24, at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, MA.
Activities will include:
- Skating clinics on a REAL 24x50 foot ice rink (see schedule) — sticks, skates and helmets will be available, but children are welcome to bring their own
- The opportunity for moms and dads to take pictures of their children with the Stanley Cup
- By showing their knowledge of the rules of hockey, kids of all ages will have the opportunity to win at-shirt by scoring at least 9 out of 10 on the sample referee exam
- Sunday, February 24th, 9 AM — 1PM — Boys and Girls ages 12 and over (with their paid admission to the festival) and adults will have the opportunity to attend the 3-hour Entry-level Referee Seminar followed by a 45-minute on-ice instructional session (bring skates and helmet) at NO additional charge (limit of 50 students), which is a savings of $20.00
We need your help to make this year’s Festival a great success. The GOAL of the Sports Festival is to get kids of all ages introduced to new sports. Everyone knows that a healthy body means a happy child and participating in sports is a great way to start. We NEED volunteers during the Festival to help distribute information, tie and untie skates, and keep an eye on Lord Stanley’s Cup. If you are interested in volunteering please contact a committee member as soon as possible.
Massachusetts Hockey has made a great effort to ensure the success of the program, but only through your active participation can we make a great introduction to young soon-to-be hockey stars. So spread the word in the rinks and around town, and even volunteer to show everyone what a great organization Mass Hockey is and how great HOCKEY is!

Squirt 4 Champs
The Squirt 4 Team led by Don Little played in the Dusty Lardin Tourney hosted by FYHA. They were very competitive beating The Demons 6-2, KP/Walpole 4-0 and Franklin 4-0 before having a rematch with KP/Walpole.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first, the Flyers came out storming the net in the second with an unassisted goal by Max F. Less than three minutes later Alec G would score on what would be the game winner with an assist from Kevin D.
Seth L. would also score at the end of the period with an assist from John B.
The third period was probably the Flyers best period of the tournament with a goal by Kevin D. assisted by Alec G. Cam B. made some keys saves in net and the defense of Caitlin M, Joey R, Shannon D, Kevin L and John B were suffocating.
The offense was relentless in the tourney outscoring opponents 18-3. The speedy combo of Alex G, Kevin D and Anthony L gave the opponents fits all weekend long. While the gritty line of Seth L, Shane E and Austin B were a true forced to be reckoned with. Finally the line of Max F, Kevin B and Antonio D showed a rare combination of finesse, speed, and strength to wear opponents down.
Congrats again to a well deserved championship and thanks to the large pro-Flyer crowd in attendance that soaked the team with water after the game.

Squirt 3 - Halloween Classic
The Squirt 3 team won 4 straight games coming up with 30 goals and allowing just 4. Kyle C. was solid between the pipes. Forwards Chris B., Connor M., and Sean H. were solid. The other line of Adam A., Kyle B., and James A. were tenacious in game 3. All tournament long the next line of the freight train PJ. M., Connor O., and CJ B. would not let any one in their zone with solid back checking. Franklin’s solid defense of Kyle C., Tom S., Brendan M., Tyler O., and Carolyn R. were more than a handful for any offense that attempted to go over the blue line; they are credited for keeping opponents to as few as 4 shots in a game. The kids played a fantastic tourney and deserved it. Thanks to all our fans. Special thanks to our coaches Rob O., Dennis H., and Jim. Other special thanks to our little fan EDDY!!! Thanks - keep it up!

Mite 1 - Halloween Classic
This past week the Mite 1 team competed in the Woonsocket Halloween Classic and on Sunday they came away with the title.
Game 1 Monday was against a tough NRI team and Franklin won a hard fought 5-2 game. Game 2 Thursday was against Woonsocket and the team walked away with a great all around 7-0 victory, limiting Woonsocket to just 4 shots the entire game.
After a league game in Westboro Saturday afternoon it was right back to Woonsocket and a game against a very tough East Haven CT team. The fatigue showed as the team fell behind 7-1 after 2. They came out fighting with 4 goals in the third to make it 7-5. Unfortunately there tanks were empty and they lost 8-5.
This meant they would have to wait to see if they made the finals. Sunday AM the call came in and a rematch against East Haven was set. Jack M started the scoring in the first 2 minutes with an assist from Henry B. East Haven then came right back 15 seconds later to tie it up. Just 2 minutes later Henry B netted one from the top of the circle to go up 2-1. The next 8 minutes went back and forth with Greg M making several key saves to keep Franklin ahead. Then with just 15 seconds left in the period East Haven tied it up 2-2 during a scrum in front of goalie Greg M.
Period 2 went back and forth with Mike C doing everything but scoring as he hit the post or the goalie 7 times. The only score went to East Haven making it 3-2 going to the 3rd.
For the second straight game period three belonged to Franklin as Justin M tied it up with an assist from Henry B with just 5 minutes to go. Then with just over 2 minutes left Noah N assisted by Ryan H put Franklin back on top for good. East Haven pulled there goalie for the extra skater but they never got a good chance and the buzzer sounded to end a fantastic championship game.
This was a great all around game from all. Greg M stopped 26 shots while forwards Joe B, Stan C, Luke D, Ryan H, Jack M, Justin M, Noah N, CJ S, and Teddy W all played great with fantastic back checking to keep East Havens top players out of Franklin’s zone.
The defense of Mike C, Austin C, Cam R and Henry B made sure East Haven did not stay in the zone too long when they got there. The D made some fantastic plays to get the puck out of the zone while making sure East Haven got no second chances.
Great job team, it was fantastic to see the never give up attitude as this was the first time all year you have been tested. Keep up the hard work and more good things will come.

USA Hockey
USA Hockey Board of Directors Makes Few Changes to Playing Rules
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — USA Hockey’s Annual Congress concluded June 9, and while this year’s legislative cycle provided the opportunity for the Board of Directors to modify the playing rules, little was ultimately changed.
The most spirited debate was in regard to the proposal to adopt the “tag up” offside rule in youth hockey. While the motion to adopt “tag up” failed, it will be allowed in high school hockey.
The Board did vote to eliminate the rule requiring mouth guards for girls under-10 in order to mirror the rule for boys.
New dimensions for goalkeeper’s equipment will be required beginning in 2009-10 and is strongly recommended for the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons. An appendix will be included in the new rulebook that includes the new dimensions.
One other highlight in regard to rule changes was the adoption of new ice markings that makes significant progress in the attempt to have one set of standardized markings across all levels of hockey. A complete overview of the new markings can be found at usahockey.com in the near future.

Squirt 4 News
Franklin Flyers Squirt 4’s win the Playoff Championship
The Franklin Flyers Squirt 4 team won the Playoff Championship against Midstate’s Squirt 2 team on Sunday (4/1) in Westboro in sudden death overtime.
The game was a well-fought battle and was never more than a goal in either team’s favor.
Midstate scored the first goal of the game in the first period. Our team answered with a goal by John L. assisted by Ben W. in the second. Midstate scored again, only to be answered by Sean T. assisted by Tyler G. late in the second period. Going in to the third, Franklin scored again courtesty of Tyler G. assited by Sean T. With only a few minutes remaining, Midstate tied it up in regulation. The winning goal was scored by the guy with the magic touch all year, John L.
Not only did the Squirt 4’s win the Playoff Championship, but they were also the Division Champions in Westboro. None of this could have happened without the outstanding play of our forwards who played great at both ends of the ice all year. Not only were they able to put the puck in the net, but they played great team defense. Squirt 4 forwards are: Maddie B., Nick D. Max F., Tyler G., John L., Derek S., Jack T., Sean T., and Dan W.
The defense was rock-solid all year and let up the fewest goals against by far in the division. They continued to frustrate our opponents throughout the playoffs and helped us win the Championship with their stingy defense. Squirt 4 defense are: Chris A., Gavin M., Michael S., Derek T. and Ben W.
Our goalie, Kyle C. had the fewest goals against in the division. He was always solid between the pipes and always came up with those big saves to keep us in the game. He even stepped it up a notch in the playoffs to help us win the Championship.
Much thanks goes to the great Assistant Coaches on the 4’s: John Tasker and Larry Garland for their dedication and commitment to making this a great year. Kudos to Brad and Andrea Chase for the great job managing the team. Also to the crazy parents of the team, nobody was louder or more enthusiastic than you! Thank you for making it such a fun year.
Congratulations Squirt 4’s!!!! What a great year!

Now that FYHA registration is in full swing for the upcoming 2007-08 season I have this update. As of Saturday, March 10th, we have had over 200 skaters register for next season. Also at this time, registration is open to all current, returning, and new players up until we reach our limit of players at each level.

Mite 3 Champs
Fresh from their Jingle Belle Tournament Championship the Franklin Flyers Mite 3 team won its second Tournament Championships this past February school vacation. The Mite 3 competed in the Bay State’s 2007 American Hockey Series Mite B Tournament and for the second time in as many Tournament competitions the Flyers came away with championship trophies.
The tournament began with the Mite 3 team facing a physical CLCF (Cranston, RI) B level team and suffering a heartbreaking 8-2 loss. The Franklin squad played over half the game in their opponents end but fell victim to a hot Cranston goalie. The score at the outcome of the game was not reflective of the Franklin effort. The Franklin kids played hard to the end with Kevin D. and Cam P. posting the two Franklin goals.
In the second game, the team regrouped gaining strength & confidence as they then faced the Tri-County Saints’ C team. Franklin and came away with their first win of the tournament by the score of 4-1. CJ B. started of the scoring with his first of two goals in the game. James K netted the second goal of the game and Kevin D. rounded out Franklin’s scoring. Luke W played a stalwart game between the pipes stopping all but one of the opponent’s chances.
Franklin’s second win came in their third game when they fought hard to emerge victorious against the Tri-County Saints’ B team by the score of 4-2. James K jump started Franklins scoring by breaking up the opposition at the red line and working with Cam P to muscle the puck to the back of the Saints net. Next was Alec G. who gathered a centering pass and out skated the opposition’s defense to tally the first of his two goals for the game. Cam P. scored the go ahead goal early in the third stanza. Eric C made certain that all the oppositions scoring was done for the day and assured the Mighty Mite 3’s an opportunity to face Cranston in a rematch for the Tournament Championship.
Franklin used their prior Cranston experience to prepare for the Championship game. The kids came focused and ready to play hockey. It was clear that Franklin would have its scoring opportunities but defense would be the key to the game. Looking like a veteran net minder, Thomas S. acted as the anchor to this team by setting the defensive tone. An unwavering defensive lineup of Jack C, Stanley C., Cameron R., Austin C. and Gregory M. stayed strong as the CLCF players could not break down Franklins blue line wall. Luke W., Ryan S., Jack M., Eric C and Anthony L. were relentless back checkers breaking up several breakaway attempts and frustrating the Cranston squad. Franklins scoring was provided by Alec G, James K and Cam P. and was highlighted by some spectacular passing to help drive Franklin to a thrilling 4-2 victory!
An unnamed spectator was overheard at the end of the game saying “those Franklin kids wanted it more than the others. They sure did hustle.”
Congratulations Mite 3’s!! From your coaches John C., Tony L., Rob M., Joe G., Lorne C. & Stan C.

Squirt 2 News
Squirt 2 Win the Central Mass Shootout!
In an overtime nail biter, the Squirt 2's defeated Newport 5-4 to win the championship. Call up from the S3's, Sean got the scoring started and Conor followed shortly after with a goal of his own. Next Andrew found Jack for the third tally of the game. Newport turned it up and thanks to a couple of non goalie friendly bounces it was 3-2. Mark M. stepped up and put us ahead 4-2, but again Newport came on strong closing the gap to 4-3, then with the goalie pulled the tied the game with less than a minute to go. Overtime ensued and about half way in Mark M took the feed from Andrew and put his second of the game in the back of the net to win the game and take the championship!
Chris, Jaime, Kyle, Drew, Nick, Marc, Marcus, KJ and Randy all helped in peppering the Newport goalie with 28 shots and keeping the puck out of our end and away from Ryan who makes it look too easy!
State Tournament next week..let's keep it rolling!

TRY-OUT INFORMATION
FYHA Families,
As we ready for registration (to be determined at our February Board meeting), I wanted to give everyone an idea when to expect try-outs this year. Although I only have a tentative schedule put together at this point, I am planning try-outs as follows:
Bantams -- end of March/beginning of April
All others -- week before and week(s) after April vacation (no try-outs on April 13, resuming on April 22).
I will be holding two informational meetings for parents, on February 18th and March 18th at 7:30 p.m. in the Franklin Rink meeting room. Anyone interested in learning more about the try-out process (i.e. what evaluators are looking for, drills that are used, how skaters are scored) should try to attend one of these sessions. I will also have sign-up sheets for anyone interested in assisting with try-outs, as evaluators, with pinnie sign-ins, with food or with “crowd control”. Volunteers are a crucial element in the try-out process running smoothly and efficiently, so I am asking anyone who can spare a couple of hours to sign-up to help. If you cannot attend one of the meetings, you can also contact me directly at the number or email listed below if you are interested in helping or with any questions.

Squirt 3 Comes on Strong
Congratulations to the Flyers Squirt 3 team. As a team, they went 21 games unbeaten to start the season before losing in the Jingle Bell Finals to a tough
The team is looking forward to moving up in the Westboro League, making a run at the State playdowns, and most importantly, having fun with their teammates.
Outstanding job by all:
PeeWee 3 advances to Snow Flake Final
PeeWee 3 played the Snowflake Tournament over the christmas holiday and had a great tournement! In the first game Duxbury and Franklin played a close game. Joe T, Peter R, Dan D, Sean D, and Tommy S played excellent defense! Scores by Justin E, and Tommy S put Franklin ahead 2 to 1. The Flyers broke it open in the third period with goals by Ben I and Connor D. Final: Flyers 4 Duxbury 1. Next up was a tough Taunton Bruins team who jumped out to an early 2 to 0 lead, but backed by strong goaltending by Mike D and the backchecking of PJ M, Matthew D, and Brian A the Flyers tied it at 2 with goals by Brian A and Ben Z . Again the Flyers owned the third period with a big goal by Tripper R and the back breaker by Tommy S to ice it. Flyers 4 Taunton 2. In the third game against the Pembroke Pythons the Flyers were sky high with their eyes on the championship game. Four first period goals -- 2 by Brian A and 2 by Connor D left little doubt who owned this Game . Three more goals by Connor D, Tripper R, and Tommy S led to a 7 to 2 rout. Ben R, Ben I and Ben Z all had strong two way games.
In the championship game the Flyers faced off against undefeated powerhouse Nantuket. Mike D's excellent goaltending kept the Flyers in it for the first period but Nantuket was unstoppable in the end winning 6 to 0. PeeWee 3 was aided greatly in this tournement by four players from Pee Wee 4: Tommy S, Ben I, Ben Z, and Peter R.
Congratulations on a great job.

Mite 2 Continues Strong Play
Saturday morning the Mite 2 team took on Concord and came away with a great 3-2 win to take there record to 7-1-2.
The first period belonged to Concord as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead. The score remained that way into the second period. Then 2 minutes into the period Franklin came back with 2 goals. Henry B (unassisted) and Kevin B. assisted by Kyle B and Brian V. 25 seconds apart to even the score. The remainder of the period went scoreless as the teams battled back and forth with Franklin goalie Cam B making some stellar saves to keep the score at 2-2.
Forwards Adam A, Kyle B, Kevin B, Ryan H, Connor O, and Brian V really moved the puck well to keep the pressure on Concord. Brendon S, Noah N and Alex C (Mighty Mite Line) were buzzing all around not allowing Concord any scoring chances.
Period 3 went back and forth until the 6 minute mark.. After a great save by Cam in net, Henry B netted the game winner on a shot from the corner. The defense led by Joey R, Kevin L, Brendon M, Kyle M, and Henry B then took over. Even after pulling there goalie with 2 minutes to go, Concord got into the zone just once, as the D stood up on the blue line and keep the puck out of the zone.
This was a great game by all. Most of all no one got down and they battled back against a tough Concord team after falling behind.
As always thanks again to the loud cheering section as the team always appreciates the support.
Keep up the hard work team.
Coaches Ollie, Dave, Mike and Hank

Dusty Lardin Memorial Tournament
The 4th Annual Dusty Lardin Memorial Tournament recently concluded at the Franklin Veteran’s Arena. The tournament is held in memory of a former FYHA Board member and coach and referee who believed in keeping the game fair and fun for all level of players. FYHA sponsors the tournament for D level Squirt and Pee Wee teams to provide them the opportunity to compete in and enjoy a tournament aimed at their level of play.
The squirt division played from October 24th through October 28th. Tri-Valley, Demons, KP Walpole and Nashoba participated along with our Squirt 5 team. Most of the games were very evenly competitive, and KP Walpole enjoyed their first wins of the season. The final game was heated contest between KP Walpole and the Franklin teams. KP had beaten Franklin earlier in the week by a score of 4-1, but the Franklin team was ready for them in the final. The game ended in a 1-1 tie, and was still even at the end of overtime. KP Walpole prevailed in a shoot-out and both teams played a tremendous game!
The pee wee division games ran the week of Halloween. Seven teams joined our Pee Wee 4 and 5 teams, representing Tri-Valley, Demons, Lakers, SMS and Newton. The competition was again pretty even. Franklin 4 team went undefeated to make it to the final game. Their opponent was not determined until one of the last games of the tournament, with Tri-Valley, SMS, Newton and Franklin 5 all vying for the last spot. Tri-Valley, who, like KP Walpole in the squirt division, won its first games of the season, ended up beating out Franklin 5 by virtue of winning against them earlier in the week by one point. In the championship game, Franklin scored in the first and Tri-Valley scored in the second, going into the third period tied. Franklin prevailed in the end, winning 4-1.
Congratulations to all the teams that participated for games well-played! And thank you to all the referees, timekeepers and other volunteers who helped make the tournament a success!

Squirt 2 News
The UNDEFEATED Squirt 2's swept the Haunted Shootout in Marlboro this weekend taking home the top spot out of 14 teams.
Ryan backstopped the team to not 1, but 3 shutouts against the Hudson Valley Polar Bears, The Ridgefield Lions, and the Princeton Tigers (oh my!) to go into the semi-finals as the number 1 seed.
In the semi-finals against Billerica, Franklin threw them a bone and gave them a one goal lead going into the 3rd period. Then Conor dished the puck to Andrew who fed it to Chris who put it in the net to tie it up. Then 3 minutes later Drew took the puck from Pumpkin and put the game winner in the net.
On to the finals against the Long Island Rebels, where again we let them get ahead in the second period, but Marc put one in the net with 15 seconds left in the 2nd to tie it up. Then in the third Chris netted the game winner with 6:10 left in the game. Great job by everyone!
Other goal scorers were Mark M (2), Jaime (4), Nick, Randy, Andrew (2), and Assists from KJ, Nick, Mark M, Conor, Chris, and Kyle. Couldn't have done it without Jack and Marcus.. and not to mention the outstading coaching staff!
